Fire Alarm Installation

Fire alarms, also known as smoke detectors or smoke alarms, are perhaps the most important component of a home security/protection system. According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) statistics, approximately 60 percent of house fire deaths occur in homes that do not have properly functioning alarms or do not have alarms installed at all. What’s more, the fire death rate is more than twice as high in homes with no working smoke alarms than in those that have them.

Why Should You Install a Fire Alarm System in Your Home?

The most obvious benefit of a home fire alarm installation is that it can save lives. Fire alarms work by detecting the presence of smoke at an early stage. They continuously check the air for traces of smoke particles and gases produced by fire, then sound an audible alert to warn the home’s occupants. When you consider that many fires occur at night while people are sleeping, this can literally make the difference between life and death.

Modern fire alarm systems also offer the advantage of remote monitoring. When the devices detect smoke, they will transmit an alarm to a central monitoring station manned by trained professionals. They can determine the validity of the signal and then dispatch fire department and other responders to the scene immediately if necessary. A prompt response can keep a small fire from turning into a raging inferno that results in loss of life and significant property damage.

There are also state and local legal requirements that mandate the installation of smoke detectors in residential properties. In New York State, for example, there are laws stipulating the placement of detectors in every room used for sleeping purposes, on the wall or ceiling outside of sleeping areas and on each floor, including the basement. As of 2017, all new smoke alarms sold in NY must contain non-removable batteries with a 10-year lifespan.

Residential Fire Alarm Installation: What You Need to Know

In addition to knowing the general locations for smoke detectors — at least one per floor, outside sleeping areas, etc. — it also important to understand the precise placement guidelines. The NFPA recommends installing alarms on the ceiling at least four inches from the nearest wall. If you place smoke detectors on a wall, they should be at least four inches but no more than 12 inches below the ceiling.
